We can deal with them. It's an informed sermon. And when those come in, how do we process them? Based upon Pauls words in Ephesians 3, I am inclined to assume what a portion of this conversation may have been: 4 When reading this, you will be able to understand my insight into this secret of Christ. He spent days and days, and weeks and weeks doing that, bringing new dimension of understanding to the Scriptures that they had never had. The second power that they'd run up against was that of the Jewish authorities. In the midst of all of the gnats, let us not miss the camel of this text, namely that the Holy Spirit was soon (not many days from now, verse 5) to come upon them, empowering them to carry out the Great Commission. He went on to show that, "It's not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father has put in His own authority, but you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you. 15 In those days Peter stood up among the believers (a gathering of about one hundred and twenty people) and said, 16 Brothers, the scripture had to be fulfilled that the Holy Spirit foretold through David concerning Judaswho became the guide for those who arrested Jesus 17 for he was counted as one of us and received a share in this ministry. 18 (Now this man Judas acquired a field with the reward of his unjust deed, and falling headfirst he burst open in the middle and all his intestines gushed out. The apostles stayed in Jerusalem, as instructed, and they devoted themselves to prayer, along with those who were closely associated with Jesus in His earthly ministry. In verse 14, it says, "Then later He appeared to the eleven as they sat at the table and He rebuked them, rebuked their unbelief and hardness of heart because they did not believe those who had seen Him after He had risen." 8We do, however, find a reference tothe twelvein both Acts 6:2 and 1 Corinthians 15:5. As we came here this morning, to services, and as we gathered here this morning ourselves, there is a very important lesson for us to learn as well. Up until this point, Paul (known as Saul until now) was clearly Barnabas assistant. He enjoys hunting, travel and reading and spending time with his grandchildren. When the apostles3press Jesus to tell them the time when the kingdom of God will be established, Jesus graciously refuses by informing them that this information is outside their authority there is no need to know so far as they are concerned. So Jesus had to rebuke them. Every generation of God's people have done that. In times past, though I have not seen this as much lately, we saw the before and after of advertising for weight gain. But isnt Pentecost and the coming of the Holy Spirit really a matter of authority, a legitimate matter of authority? What I would like to underscore is the role of the Holy Spirit in our Lords giving of the Great Commission. Maybe a few more decided to go to Jerusalem on Pentecost to see what was going on, and the town was bursting at the seams, and from all these nations that we're told about here and areas. And it just caused them to proverbially tear their clothes and rush at them and ultimately to the point of Stephen and they stoned him. This is the dimension that was given on Pentecost, and what this day is all about for those of us who are the firstfruits. We can accomplish the work of God, and we can then be the firstfruits who follow the Lamb and who know their God and do mighty deeds and mighty exploits. And so they didn't really think about that, and yet all of a sudden it came upon them. And of course, one of the most dramatic scenes in all the Bible occurred with the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the gathered disciples, and the speaking in tongues, and a mighty rushing wind that we find it hard to imagine what it was like, because it's not part of our custom to try to pray that down today like some other denominations and religious forms do. Acts 1 is the before section of this great book. 5 For John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now. 6 So when they had gathered together, they began to ask him, Lord, is this the time when you are restoring the kingdom to Israel? 7 He told them, You are not permitted to know the times or periods that the Father has set by his own authority. That is the vision that Jesus has for His Church as articulated by the apostle Paul in Ephesians 4:16, and they had it at this moment. Show us which one of these two you have chosen 25 to assume the task of this service and apostleship from which Judas turned aside to go to his own place. 26 Then they cast lots for them, and the one chosen was Matthias; so he was counted with the eleven apostles (Acts 1:15-26). But on that 50th day, from the morning after Christ's resurrection, a lot had happened. This was just three and a half years, and in really a few weeks, seven weeks and a day of intense thought, emotion, that they had to grapple with and deal with as they came into the presence of one another on the morning of Pentecost. No lots were cast here, nor did they need to be. I remember taking my little bag and walking over and kind of looking around, and sitting down on a bench. But let's go back, let's look at a few of these scriptures in a little bit more detail and see exactly what had been taking place among the disciples during this period of time, that brought them to that morning of Pentecost. To seek this knowledge is to go outside the boundaries of their authority.4. Consider these elements: First we find the doctrine of the Trinityin the first chapter, which speaks of the Father (1:4), the Son (1:4, etc. It was a mighty, powerful machine, the most powerful that the world in that day had ever seen. The Feast of the Ascension ranks with Christmas, Easter, and Pentecost in the universality of its observance among Christians. He said He wouldn't and He didn't, even though there was a moment in time when they thought that they were orphaned, as they stood gazing up and looking and wondering, "What do we do next. Our sins will find us out. The betrayal of our Lord was no accident, and it did not catch God off guard.
